“To look back now at my past, I would feel justified to say that despite my poor upbringing in my early years I have been abiding by the Chinese ethics of Yan and Ye - humanity and righteousness as my personal moral principles, holding on perseverance, patience and industry as my working attitudes, and practising humility and trustworthiness in dealing with people. I would like my descendants to know that these are the keys to the creation of any enterprise.

Alongside, it is of course equally important not to be impetuous, dishonest and covetous of small gains. At an age of over 70, I have done nothing to be ashamed of and though my achievements have been limited, it is my most earnest wish here that this spirit of industry and righteousness be well understood and remembered by my descendants and thus be carried on far ahead.”

  • 1913

    The late Mr Makmur Tjangdjaja was born in On Wo Lei, Guangzhou in 1913 and attended a local private school until he was 13.

  • 1918

    At the age of 14, Mr. Makmur stopped his education and began his life as a farmer, helping his family survive the death of their father.

  • 1928

    In 1928, Mr Makmur travelled to his brother’s town in Jakarta, where he began his apprenticeship in the family grocery shop. He took tutoring lessons at home to learn Indonesian.

  • 1930

    In mid October of 1930, Mr. Makmur travelled back to China to prepare for the wedding of himself and his bride to be, Miss Leung. They were married in November.

  • 1936

    Mr Makmur took over the family run grocery business, riding a bike to and from Kotabumi, he brought salted meats, vegetables, kerosene and ice water.

  • 1939

    To compete with the neighbouring stores, he began growing bean shoots and other vegetables to make bean cakes and fried peanuts for customers and workers. He learnt to drive so as to deliver goods around town, and often gave lifts to the sick or elderly on his way to the railway station.

  • 1942

    The Second World War found Indonesia invaded by Japanese military. The family was forced to flee to the mountains for a time.

  • 1943

    Mr. Makmur established Chung Ping Company, selling limestone and other building materials to locals and nearby towns as well as keeping his vegetable farms prosperous.

  • 1948

    Following the devastation of WW2, MR. Makmur rebuilt the family funds and managed to open the ShangHai Hotel in Palembang. However during his time here, he realised he had no passion for Hotel management and instead opened a small rice noodle factory in Nakau.

  • 1958

    Mr Makmur and his family moved into their new home in Palembang, which had been built by Mr. Makmur himself. His daughter began her schooling in China.

  • 1963

    Mr Makmur’s eldest son was entrusted with the running of the business he had set up years previously, named P T Pantja Makmur, in Palembang.

  • 1969

    The family moved to Singapore to educate the 3rd generation of children.

  • 1976

    The family migrated to Australia, setting up the family trust corporation ‘Makmur Enterprises’ to support future generations.

  • 1977

    The Makmur Enterprises company purchases its first building site in Richmond, previously Peter Ice Cream, and begins preparations for the distribution of dim sims.

  • 1980

    The Richmond Food Factory finally begins full scale production of Asian appetisers to Victorian supermarkets, branching out in later months to national coverage.
